How to use “Phase and Mid/Side”
- Add one or more stereo files.
- Choose: invert the left or right channel, extract Mid or extract Side.
- Click “Listen 10 s”; tick “Listen summed to mono” to hear what cancels out.
- Choose MP3 or WAV, click the button and download the result.
Polarity, Mid and Side
Inverting the polarity multiplies a channel by −1: useful for fixing a microphone wired backwards or for checking phase problems (if the bass disappears when summed to mono, the channels are out of phase). Mid is (L + R) / 2, whatever sounds the same on both sides: vocals, kick and bass usually sit there, and it is what you will hear on a mono speaker. Side is (L − R) / 2, only the difference between the channels: reverb, wide instruments and stereo effects; anything centered cancels out, which is why it is used as a homemade “vocal remover”. Mid + Side rebuilds the left channel and Mid − Side the right one, so no information is lost if you keep both. Both are exported on the two channels.
Are my files uploaded?
No. ShiftAny Audio processes your audio directly on your device: this tool runs in your browser and never sends your files to any server.
Limits and metadata
ShiftAny sets no duration or size limits: the real ceiling is your device’s memory, because the audio is decompressed to be processed and an hour of stereo takes more than 1 GB. With very long files, we warn you before loading them. The new file contains only the audio: tags (title, artist, cover art) are not copied.
Frequently asked questions
Can it remove the vocals from a song?
Partly: extracting Side removes whatever is exactly in the center, which is usually the lead vocal, but also the kick and bass, and it leaves the vocal’s reverb behind. It is the classic phase-cancellation vocal remover.
How do I check my mix’s mono compatibility?
Choose any mode and tick “Listen summed to mono”. If the bass or an instrument loses a lot of strength when the original is summed, there are phase problems between the channels.
Does it work with mono files?
You can invert the polarity of a mono file. Mid/Side and the right channel need two channels: in a mono file, Side would be silence.
How is this different from “Stereo to Mono”?
“Stereo to Mono” sums the channels or extracts one as it is. Here you work with the relationship between them: Mid is what they share and Side is what sets them apart.
