How to use “MP3 to AAC”

  1. Add the MP3 files you want to turn into AAC: you can drop several at once.
  2. Choose the AAC kbps: there is no need to go above the MP3’s, because lost quality does not come back.
  3. Click “Convert to AAC” and wait while each MP3 is processed.
  4. Download each AAC on its own, or all your converted MP3 files in a ZIP.

From MP3 to AAC: what to expect

AAC is the lossy codec of Apple Music, iTunes and many phones, and at the same kbps it usually sounds better than MP3. The file comes out as .aac (an ADTS stream), which VLC, Windows, macOS, Android and iOS can open. Starting from an MP3 means re-encoding: AAC cannot recover what the MP3 already lost, so asking for more kbps than the original only makes the file bigger. Your own browser encodes it: you need current Chrome or Edge on Windows, macOS or Android, and if its encoder tops out below the kbps you chose, the result says so.

Are my files uploaded?

No. ShiftAny Audio processes your audio directly on your device: this tool runs in your browser and never sends your files to any server.

Limits and metadata

ShiftAny sets no duration or size limits: the real ceiling is your device’s memory, because the audio is decompressed to be processed and an hour of stereo takes more than 1 GB. With very long files, we warn you before loading them. The new file contains only the audio: tags (title, artist, cover art) are not copied.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AAC and M4A?

Both carry AAC audio. An .aac file is the audio stream as it is; an .m4a stores it inside an MP4 container with an index and metadata. This tool makes .aac files; if you need the MP4 container for a ringtone, use “MP3 to M4R”.

Does converting MP3 to AAC improve the sound?

No. The AAC starts from the already decoded MP3 and is encoded again, so it can only match it, never improve on it. It is worth it when a device or app asks you for AAC.

Which kbps should I choose for AAC?

128 kbps is enough for listening to music and 96 is enough for speech. Choosing more than the source MP3’s bitrate does not add quality.
