How to use “Remove Silence”
- Add the recordings you want to remove the silence from.
- Choose what to remove: just the start and end, or the long pauses as well.
- Leave the threshold on “Automatic” or pick a level; you will see how many seconds will be removed.
- Click “Remove silence”, listen to the result and download it.
How it decides what is silence
The level is measured in 10 ms windows (in stereo, the louder channel: a sound on a single channel is never cut). With the automatic threshold, the starting point is your recording’s background noise, so it also works with an air conditioner or a hiss in the background. A 50 ms margin is kept next to every sound so the start of words and the tail of notes are not clipped, and every cut gets a 5 ms fade so no click is heard. Pauses shorter than the minimum you choose are left alone: the natural rhythm of speech is preserved.
Are my files uploaded?
No. ShiftAny Audio processes your audio directly on your device: this tool runs in your browser and never sends your files to any server.
Limits and metadata
ShiftAny sets no duration or size limits: the real ceiling is your device’s memory, because the audio is decompressed to be processed and an hour of stereo takes more than 1 GB. With very long files, we warn you before loading them. The new file contains only the audio: tags (title, artist, cover art) are not copied.
Frequently asked questions
Will it cut off words or breaths?
It should not: only stretches below the threshold are removed, with a 50 ms margin next to every sound. Breaths usually stay above the automatic threshold; if you want to remove them too, raise the threshold to −40 dB.
What if it removes nothing?
Your recording has loud background noise. Try a fixed threshold (−50 or −40 dB) and listen to the result.
Can I keep some pause between sentences?
Yes: in “Ends and long pauses” you choose from how many seconds a pause is shortened and how much silence is kept (0.3 s by default), so the audio does not sound rushed.
How is this different from “Trim Audio”?
Here silence is detected automatically and removed in all your files, even in the middle of a recording. In “Trim Audio” you pick a single section of one file by hand.
