How to use “Voice Recorder”
- Click “Record” and allow access to the microphone.
- Speak: you will see the level and the time. Click “Stop” when you are done.
- Listen to the take; if you do not like it, discard it and record another.
- Download it as MP3, WAV or in its original format.
How it records
Recording uses the microphone through the browser, with its echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain control. It is stored in chunks in the tab’s memory and, when you stop, joined into a single file (Opus in WebM or Ogg; AAC in Safari). When it finishes, the microphone is switched off. To turn it into MP3 or WAV it is decoded and re-encoded, also on your device.
Are my files uploaded?
No. ShiftAny Audio processes your audio directly on your device: this tool runs in your browser and never sends your files to any server.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it ask for microphone permission?
The browser never lets anything record without your permission. If you denied it, click the padlock in the address bar, allow the microphone and click “Record” again.
What happens if I close the tab without downloading?
The take is lost: it only lives in this tab’s memory until you download it.
Which format should I download?
MP3 for sharing or listening anywhere. WAV if you are going to edit it afterwards without loss. The original (WebM, Ogg or M4A) is the lightest, but not every program opens it.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in current Android and iOS browsers. Keep the screen on and the tab visible while you record.
